This is my very late entry for Pod Aware Day 1 - The History of Podfic

Podfic has a long and varied history, check out pod_aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr to hear some personal accounts of podfic history.

I'm a femslasher, so that's all I know to talk about.... listening to femslash podfics.
I'm also not a native speaker, so if anything sounds off, please assume it's my bad language skills, not bad manners... :)

This was really interesting and provided a new perspective on podfic history! I added some of your recollections to Fanlore since we often lack femslash info:

Thanks for the correction--I fixed the page name! Now that I have the correct name I see she is mentioned on several other Fanlore pages....

Don't worry about getting things wrong! Fanlore is a work in progress, and we can always fix errors and add more viewpoints.

OK, I added a bit more to her page. I was uncertain whether it was safe to add her real name, even though I could google it--Fanlore has an identity protection policy that errs on the side of caution, and her real name website doesn't mention her pseud. She was apparently interviewed twice for the same Whoosh article, but under different names. Do you happen to know why?

I find these differences in editing very interesting. I assume editing analogue audio would have been next to impossible--either too time-consuming or too expensive. But I know some people still put out podfic unedited or semi-edited, or at least have a trick to editing to make it faster (scanning the waveform visually for cues, etc.). Meanwhile, I plod along, editing 5 minutes worth in an HOUR and wishing for death, having made more work for myself by recording the same sentence five times with different intonations.

This was so interesting! I really appreciated hearing about the audiofic past for femslash. Thank you for sharing.

(I hope the archive gets a femslash top pairing, too - I think there's enough femslasher podficcers now that we could definitely make that a reality!)

This was awesome to listen to! I had no knowledge of this whole side of podfics in femslash and german fandoms. Thank you so much for sharing! :DD

I was in Xena fandom and went by the name WordWarior. I've been a voice actress since the 80s, as well as a professional writer. I wrote some fan fiction and decided to record it, because that's what I do with all of my writing projects. It's a great way to hear mistakes and awkward writing. I mentioned the recorded fanfic in passing on a mailing list I belonged to. The place went nuts, trying to get copies. This was back in the nineties (probably 1997) and it was all cassette tapes back then. I had professional equipment to some extent, I used a good mic, had a sampler so I could add sound effects and music on the fly, and had two dual tape decks, meaning I could record four originals at a time, or could easily dupe tapes. I spent way too long duping tapes for the mailing list and decided never to mention my recordings again, even though I continued to record my stories.

A couple years later I needed some cash and started a business recording fan fiction for authors and tape consortiums (groups of fans who pooled their money to pay my fees). Carol's audio fan fiction page was the result of Carol's consortium. Later she added the results of the Missy Good consortium. Eventually I quit doing it for personal reasons, but the tapes were out there.

I had never heard of anyone recording fan fiction before I thought of it. Not that it didn't happen, I just don't know about it. I've only been in Xena fandom, so I'm unaware of anything else. I know now there's a lot. You mentioned a couple of short stories that are on the web. I put those up for another group and one of them offered to host them. I try to keep my real name separate from my fan fiction names but several people have betrayed that confidence. Thank you for not doing so.

If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them. You found my name, so go to my website (it's my real name) and "contact me".
