“Making TV is like making soup. Producers offer up a recipe; networks (and a growing number of on-demand streaming media companies) supply the broth; writers chop up all the ingredients; directors add the meats and vegetables, however they see fit; the veggies dance with the herbs and the meats brush up against the spices; the editor chooses how much of each thing should go into the bowl; the network tastes it and suggests “improvements”; and finally, the audience gobbles up the soup in its finished form.

Now, here’s the rub: The finished bowl of soup is the thing that counts. It doesn’t matter what the recipe promised, or how the ingredients were meant to taste, or what the herbs and spices have tasted like when mixed together in the past. What matters is the whole bowl of soup. And nobody — nobody — knows soup like the foodies of fandom.

So what you get is fandom saying, “Hey, when spinach and green beans are in my spoon together, it’s the most delicious thing I have ever tasted!” And the network saying, “You’re not even supposed to taste the spinach!” And the writers saying, “Those things got on your spoon together by accident; the green beans go with the tomatoes.” And the showrunner saying, “The spinach will be in a few more bowls of soup in the future, so just feel lucky and don’t get weird when we don’t pair it with green beans.” And a shrinking (but still vocal) minority of soup-eaters shouting that Jesus hates when spinach and green beans mix together. And the actors smiling and waving and shrugging because the kitchen is a mean place and they’re just happy to be in a bowl of soup.

But what has been cooked cannot be uncooked!"

This is one of my favorite fanfics of all time! I'm so happy Telanu let me podfic her story!

“And yet fanfiction is an inherently transformative work which, by its very nature, strives to address or change some flaw that exists in canon, even if that flaw is “why isn’t there more of this thing?!” Fanfiction has addressed the lack of gay men by making straight characters gay; it’s addressed countless cultural misappropriations with wildly varying AUs; it’s addressed canon plot holes and timeline issues with fix-it fics and crossovers. Fanfic is the show your show could be like, if only you dared to dream.

But for all its transformative nature, fanfiction and fandom still suffer from a real dearth of femslash. Beyond the simple fact that very few girls exist in canon materials, the societal emphasis on the male gaze seems to have affected fanficcers’ creativity to such an extent that even in our own fantasies, we cannot give women a fair shake. Just as the answer to “Why is there so much slash?” cannot be boiled down to “ Well, straight girls are horny”, the answer to “Why isn’t there any femslash?” cannot be boiled down to “Well, straight girls don’t care.” The bias against female characters and female pleasure is an ingrained, institutionalized problem which won’t go away on its own."

See, I started podficcing in March 2013 - mainly because my favorite show got so bad and effed up that I couldn't continue vidding for it.
I just couldn't bring it upon myself to watch those eps over and over again to find good clips. Podficcing sounded way cooler... having the whole world of fanfic to play with!! :)
And so this is the result of my first nine months as a podficcer...

Stats: Podfic - 14 stories, ~2 1/2 hours overall, in 4 fandoms (Once Upon a Time, Warehouse 13, The Devil Wears Prada and Harry Potter), 2 vids (Once Upon a Time related)

Most popular?
By hits: Comfort; by downloads: Let down your hair, by comments & kudos: Hoyotoho!

Most underappreciated?
By downloads: Signature, a short Bering & Wells podfic I did for the IDF. And Settings and Second Takes, which is such a beautiful, haunting story written by fictorium - I wish more people would listen to it. Or read it. Whatever. ;) By hits: clearly Hoyotoho!

Personal favorite, for whatever reason?
Hoyotoho!, hands down. Older lesbians in love & opera music, a match made in heaven! I was singing and grinning throughout the whole editing process. Also I think I got the incorporated music and sound effects to work for the story. *proud*

Most difficult to make?
184 Words, by far! The story by Ayoshen - a new take on Regina's torture scene in the 2x21 episode of OUAT - is no easy read with its unusual narrative and recording it over three days brought me to my limits. I'm still happy I did it though, because I learned a lot about the editing process and how to work with effects with this podfic.

Most “ah ha ha I can’t believe I’m doing this”?
Are You There God? It's Me, Mary Margaret is such a cracky "Everybody in Storybrook is gay" fic and I don't like crackfics. Like, at all. But after reading the story something possessed me to ask for permission and get out the mic... I'm absolutely happy with the outcome though.

Most fun to make?
Again, Hoyotoho!, because the recording and editing were so easy (well, except for those english phrases I just couldn't wrap my tongue around) and I had so much fun, plus the story gives you all the cues for the music to incorporate.

And Are You There God..., because I ususally hate Mary Margaret with a burning passion and torturing her a little bit in this podfic was a delight. Plus I liked editing the music bits.

Was there one that didn’t turn out the way you wanted?
One? There are all but two podfics I would like to go back to work some more on it. ;) I wish I'd be better in doing character voices and accents - alas, as non-native speaker this will never happen - so I'd say An Unusual Proposal. HG Wells is so hard! And there was something off with my pacing.

Biggest learning experience?
184 Words was the first podfic I used various special effects with. I worked with like eight simultaneous tracks on that one at one point. It was a bit overwhelming and frustrating at times, but I learned a lot.

What’s next?
Trying to get healthy again, I have voice trouble for several months now. ;P

I'm currently editing three short podficlets in different fandoms (Devil Wears Prada, OUaT and Rizzoli & Isles).
Next up for recording is a short DWP story by Telanu and two longer Swan Queen stories.
Two WIP I'm working on for quite a while now are a 93+k words Janeway/Seven story by BaileyB and a "Swan Queen Musical" (a ~2hour podfic/fanmix/dialogue remix thingie).

And there's one more OUAT vid I'd like to do....

Basically I'm totally out of place here, because I'm so bad at blogging. My english sucks, I'm neither witty nor snarky and I'm far too old for...well, social media in general. So I mostly lurk. ;)
Still, I'm here, so my podfics and vids will have another home and to have better access to all the posts from those fabulously creative podficcers that inspired me to start recording fanfic.
Femslash podfic that is. :)

About me: Fangirling for the third decade now. TV addict. SciFi fan. Femslash reader. Filk writer. History lover. Musician and music teacher. And now Podficcer.

What started with one ship has long grown into an armada. Currently residing in my heart are the lovely ladies from Once Upon a Time, Warehouse 13, The Fosters, Orange is the New Black, Lost Girls, Bad Girls, Star Trek Voyager, The Devil wears Prada, Birds of Prey, The X-Files, Farscape, Babylon 5, Stargate SG1, Xena (always!) and oh, so many more.
English isn't my first language, so if something sounds off, please assume it's bad language skills, not bad manners.
